Abandoned Hotels

Abandoned hotels are great fun! The architecture is often fascinating, and hotels have the potential to have a lot of interesting history. Not only do they tell intriguing stories of the past, but they are often situated in beautiful landscapes.

For example, the Táin Village Holiday Park (one of my childhood holiday favourites) is tucked away in Carlingford, Louth, in Ireland’s Ancient East. The region is scattered with rolling hills of flowers, medieval ruins, and glacial loughs – all under the watchful eye of the 600m Slieve Foye mountain.

That’s one of the great things about urbex. It not only takes you out of your comfort zone, it takes you to beautiful places in the world you would never have seen if you weren’t into abandoned buildings!

Backpacker’s Hostel in Northbridge, Perth

This abandoned backpacker’s hostel in Northbridge, Perth, was a surprise find on my way to work one day. The stark blue colour really stood out and the building had a creepy vibe about it. That same day, I drove back to the site on my lunch break and managed to climb over the wall around the back (in a skirt). There was an open window, which was pretty high, but I was able to scale over it, but after all that effort, it was a dead end. The door leading out of the room didn’t lead into the hallway like I thought it would, I was met with a wall of concrete! Very annoying! There were a lot of security signs around this site, and the neighbour gave me the evils when he saw me scoping it out, so watch out if you’re planning a trip to this strange, abandoned hostel in Perth! Abandoned Hotel in Da Nang, Vietnam

While riding the 21km Hai Van Pass road, through the Truong Son Mountains in Da Nang, Vietnam, I came across two abandoned buildings. The first was the caretakers house of the Hai Van watch tower, a military structure built by the Nguyen dynasty on the top of Hai Van pass in 1862 to protect the imperial city of Hue and supervise activities in Da Nang harbour. The second building was a hotel back in the day, tucked away along the Hai Van Pass. As I mentioned before, in my post about the Franciscan Ruins in Da Lat, I don’t feel very comfortable going into abandoned buildings alone in Vietnam. It’s actually the only country where I’ve been cautious about exploring alone, mainly in case I run into someone and can’t communicate with them (English-speaking Vietnamese people don’t exist in Vietnam) and there are lots of stray dogs here. In fact, stray dogs are more of a worry to me than falling roofs or holes in the floor! But although English isn’t their strength, the Vietnamese are incredibly kind and helpful towards tourists. As an example, while I was standing at the wobbly iron gate obstructing access to the overgrown driveway

Abandoned Táin Village Holiday Park, County Louth, Ireland

The Táin Village Holiday Park and Outdoor Centre is situated in one of Ireland’s most beautiful areas – Omeath, County Louth. In fact, the area surrounding the former holiday park site is renowned for its natural beauty, sparkling rivers, and rolling hills lush with greenery and wildflowers. And of course, there’s the Carlingford Lough, a glacial fjord forming part of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This outstanding natural beauty is what made the Táin Village Holiday Park so popular for family holidays back in the 90’s. According to news reports, it closed down in 2007 and since then has been left in the hands of Mother Nature and unfortunately, vandals and arsonists. But like many other abandoned historic buildings that I’ve come across on my urbex adventures, the Táin has become a hotspot for film producers due to its dramatic backdrop. Most of the main buildings now feature burnt walls, fallen ceilings, and peeling wallpaper. Trees are beginning to sprout out of the fireplaces, rotting beds can be found upstairs in the main building, and the once grandiose red carpets are now tattered and crumbling. Additionally, in most of the rooms, the ceilings have fallen

Abandoned Byford Motel in Perth, WA

This abandoned motel was a lovely find after I finished exploring the Greenacre Riding School in Wellard. It felt like old school urbex, you know, hopping over a fence and just straight away walking into the open arms of an abandoned building with not one window boarded up! Gone are those days for the most part, unfortunately! I’m not saying I don’t love the challenge of getting into a building with seemingly no way in, but it’s always so much more relaxing when there are fewer barriers. I was also pretty tired the day I did this motel. I had already done the riding school, an abandoned dance school, and the abandoned communications centre in Kwinana! Abandoned Hotel, Hoi An, Vietnam

One will find a strange collection of buildings along the road between Da Nang and Hoi An, Central Vietnam. One of these is an abandoned hotel – a white-washed medium-sized building in the middle of a seriously overgrown field. I have no idea how I spotted it while doing 80km on my scooter. Perhaps my urbexadar pinged? Ooo that’s a new word! :P I signalled to my buddy to do a U-Turn and we went to check it out. Previous Next

Abandoned Broadway Hotel, Brisbane, Australia

The abandoned Broadway Hotel in Brisbane has been protected by the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992, but that hasn’t deterred arsonists, graffiti artists, squatters and urban exploring photographers like me! :)  Sadly, the building has been destroyed by three fires and much of the structure, walls and ceilings are totally dilapidated. The ground floor is still mostly intact whereas the upper floor required a lot of caution. Due to the fires, many of the upstairs rooms and corridors end abruptly with a gaping, charred hole leading straight down to the ash-covered ground floor. Broadway Hotel, located in Brisbane’s inner-south, was designed by John Hall & Son and built from 1889 to c. 1942 by Wooley & Whyte. Its architecture and interior, or what is left of it, is interesting and beautiful to photograph. I only wish more of the building was still intact! The hotel was the third building I tried to photograph in one day and I was delighted to find a way in, as the first two buildings didn’t work out. The first attempt was the abandoned Wolston Park Hospital (otherwise known as Wacol Lunatic Mental Asylum, Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum or Goodna Mental Health Hospital) and the second was the
